If You Live In South Dakota Check Your Horoscope

Seems that the good law makers of South Dakota now believe that global warming could be caused by astrology…

By a 36-30 vote, the legislators passed House Concurrent Resolution 1009,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the House of Representatives of the Eighty-fifth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the Senate concurring therein, that the South Dakota Legislature urges that instruction in the public schools relating to global warming include the following:

(1) That global warming is a scientific theory rather than a proven fact;
(2) That there are a variety of climatological, meteorological, astrological, thermological, cosmological, and ecological dynamics that can effect [sic] world weather phenomena and that the significance and interrelativity of these factors is largely speculative; and
(3) That the debate on global warming has subsumed political and philosophical viewpoints which have complicated and prejudiced the scientific investigation of global warming phenomena; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Legislature urges that all instruction on the theory of global warming be appropriate to the age and academic development of the student and to the prevailing classroom circumstances.

The senate of SD did pass a bill removing most of the crap above, but still left in the part about how global warming isn’t real because it is just a theory…like the theory of gravity, of the theory of relativity…you know just theories. One could only hope that they abandon all reason, and go out daily to test the “theory” of gravity by throwing themselves off high places.

In all honesty, if this is the best our leaders can muster, we have very little hope of making it as a species…I suggest you all start doing things on your own and/or get new leaders.

  1. Good God! That’s kind of scary! Doesn’t this kind of smack of … well … fascism?

    No, no. Not what the South Dakota legislature is doing but, rather, what you’re talking about just here. Particularly the part where those of dissenting opinion should “test the “theory” of gravity by throwing themselves off high places.” And maybe even that rather statist part about where our “leaders” will lead us to survival as a species.

    Dissent, disagreement, and discourse is the whole basis of science and peer review entirely (not to mention the very foundation of our Republic) which, in fact, produced our present knowledge on the subjects of gravity and relativity. But you can’t allow for it or tolerate it. You must find that to be an odd logical dilemma. But at least you were able to ham-fist an attempt at The God’s Honest Truth using those two subjects in correlation to climate change.

    Unfortunately, yours is just another disappointing, anti-intellectual example of how environmentalism in general has entirely lost focus and become a mere political issue, or a Green sales pitch, or more recently with climate change – just another faith based religion that claims to posses the Truth with a capital T.

  2. Jim, you miss the point entirely, the leaders of this state are talking about singling out global warming as “a theory” and making sure that “both sides are taught” but fail to do so on any other “theory.” Now why would these people single out a single bit of science (a very well supported one I might add) and want to teach people that it might be caused by astrology, or that it is just a theory, and that we shouldn’t worry about it? Could it be because they have taken large sums of money from companies that wish to keep making large sums of money by pumping large amounts of co2 into the air?

    You say a lot without saying anything at all, the leaders in south dakota are acting purely on politics and greed, and have NO basis in science for the things they are doing.
