Land Rover Save Planet, Stop Making Cars

Land rover screwed

Sorry about the big image, I did my best reducing it from the broadsheet newspaper advert I stumbled upon last week, but it’s got to be big, hasn’t it? Land Rover are taking out adverts in all the newspapers, they are so concerned about the planet that they’ve decided to jack it all in: yes, it’s true, Land Rover are no longer making or selling cars. No more Freelanders, no more Range Rover Sports, no more Defenders, nothing. It’s all going on the scrap heap because they have finally realised, after years of marketing vehicles that do 18 miles per gallon (that’s just over 14 MPG in North America) or even worse, that the planet is frying and they are partly to blame. So, in deference to our only reason for existing, they are giving up the motor trade.

Great!

If only it were true.

Sadly, that’s just in my dreams. In reality, Land Rover – owned by our old friends, Ford – are just splattering the pages of newspapers and magazines around the world with the same old rubbish about carbon offsetting, sustainable vehicles, new technology and, that old favourite, supporting green projects. Good old Land Rover – masters at pretending they actually care. Good old Land Rover – masters at the greatest mass-mobilisation PR campaign we are ever likely to see in our lifetimes: the motor industry going “green”.

What a load of greenwash.

  1. Hi Keith I have to say, I totally disagree. My landrover gets 22.5mpg, its 31 years old this summer, its an awesome truck, I love it to bits I really do, but 22.5mpg isnt bad for a 1978 vehicle with an engine deisgned in 1958 is it?

Screw FreeLanders and rangies, and discos, but take the good old Defender, before 2000, this was another, fantastic workhorse that only did important things, work the land, deliver in remote places, save lives, and do rough work.

Before they went all yuppyish, LandRover made some bloody fantastic vehicles.

  2. I have to disagree as well. Look at the Monroney (that’s the window sticker in a new vehicle). It states that on an 18 mpg (highway) you will get between 14 and 22 mpg. Your fuel economy depends on how you drive. I get around 22 mpg on the highway and around 17 mpg on my 2006 Range Rover. Most vehicles don’t get any better than that. The new 5.0L engine will get 7% better fuel economy with almost 100 more horsepower and 110 more on the Supercharged vehicles. Have you checked out the fuel economy and emissions on a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid……….?

By the way, what do Jeep, Nissan, Toyota, Hummer (who are going out of business), Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Chevy, etc. do for the planet? Combine them together and they don’t do HALF of what Land Rover does.

Did you know that 85% of Land Rover parts are recyclable?

Did you know that almost 80% of land Rovers since 1948 are still on the road?

    Have a great day!
