It’s Things Like This That Keep Me Going

I got this wonderful email yesterday and thought I would share it with the rest of you.

I’m just writing a little thank you for brightening my day. It’s nice to know that there are people out there that have a big enough heart to try to change the world even if that change occurs no farther than their own communities. It wasn’t long ago, less than a month ago in fact, that the concept of people trying to make any kind of real change in their communities seemed to me nothing less than a joke and an act of futility…….and then my neighbor passed away. He left behind an 84 year old widow. She and her husband started out as one of my landscaping customers and even though they have been one of my neighbors for over 7 years, I never met them until this past spring. There was nothing remarkable about them other than the fact that their long lives did not turn them into jaded, angry people. They were always polite and payed their bill on time. What more could a small business owner want?

This past month Mr. B. passed away. I didn’t know him on a personal level so, to be honest, I didn’t mourn……but Mrs. B. certainly did. To make matters worse for the lady…this was her second time losing her life partner. She was widowed for the first time about 30 years ago. I started calling her daily just to see if she was alright. I did nothing special. Just a phone call. Then about 2 weeks ago she informed me that none of the other neighbors have called her more than once and none have visited her. My life partner Mike and I were the only people who have showed that they cared…AT ALL. To be totally honest…I was appalled!!!! How can any HUMAN in their right mind ignore an 84 year old widow? It’s not only that she’s a widow…she’s not in the best of health and needs a little assistance with cooking, shopping, handyman work around the house…bla, bla, bla..you can imagine the rest.

I’m not writing this to you to get a pat on the back or even a smile. I’m writing to thank you for coming up with this blog because….and I was totally shocked…..there are not too many people out there that even care about their neighbors. This world is starting to look more and more dismal all the time. We need more points of light out there willing to make a difference. Keep spreading the good word and doing the good deed. I just read about the Sietch and thought it was funny because I’m a huge DUNE fan, but the more I read the more I felt that I just had to drop you a line to say THANK YOU.

Thanks Matthew that really brightened up my day.
