Here is a little insight into how a lot of the BP oil drilling people thought about learning to use oil containing booms, warning lots of saucy word choice, but you get the idea. It would seem that from top to bottom from the gas station to the president with BP and the rest of the oil companies in the middle, one and only one thing has been worried about…PROFIT. Making as much money as possible, damn the consequences. Now we have a graphic idea of what happens when something goes wrong a mile under the ocean.
Oil is harder to find now, we are using tar sands, and deep water drilling, and exploiting poor people in other countries (with global political consequences), all to satisfy our voracious appetite for oil.
If you feel bad about this event, if you want to know how you can help, its simple. Ride your bike, use less plastic, take the bus, walk. These simple actions build up. You should also be calling your representatives and letting them know that you want tougher regulations on oil drilling, and that you want a tax on carbon, and that you want more renewable energy. You can also insulate your home, turn the thermostat down a bit in the winter, plant a tree. There are literally thousands of ways you can act to make this crisis better, even if you can’t get down to the gulf and clean up dirty beaches.
