Thousands of citizens from across Massachusetts and beyond are coming to Boston to demand action from their elected representatives and learn effective tools and strategies to utilize in their communities. Citizens will engage in a weekend full of activities, including workshops on climate organizing, city/town break-out sessions around Green Jobs, and Soul Purpose Live: an afternoon rally on the Boston Common complete with music, activism, and leadership. The weekend will culminate on Monday with a lobbying push at the State House to pass the Global Warming Solutions Act and set Massachusetts as a national and global model by reducing Massachusetts’ Greenhouse Gas Emissions 80% below 1990 levels by the year 2050, and 20% below 1990 levels by 2020 (in keeping with what scientists say we need to do in the developed world in order to avoid the worst consequences of Climate Change). After lobbying for this incredibly important bill, citizens will then return to their communities empowered, trained, and organized to green their state and communities and to advocate for the creation of Green Collar Jobs in their communities, making sure the benefits of the Green Economy are shared with people of all income levels.
The time for action is now. This is not only the challenge of our year, of our generation, or of our nation. This is the challenge of our civilization. Will we rise to meet it? As citizens of the most powerful nation in the world, which with only 5% of the global population emits 1/4 of the world’s Greenhouse Gases, we have a moral responsibility to protect what has been given to us, and to make sure that future generations are able to live in a clean, prosperous, and just society. Yet even as we look to the future, we must not ignore the needs of the present. We must push for Green Jobs in our communities and across our state to give people the means to support themselves.
Our voices matter. Our votes matter. Our actions matter. Our politicians work for us. Rise up, speak out, and let your voices be heard! Learn how to be an effective Climate Champion! Come to Boston on April 11-14th and help chart the path for our state, country, and world towards a more just and sustainable future!
