MSNBC Democratic Debate Heavy On Sound Bites, Light On Substance

“Have you ever seen a UFO? What Halloween costume will you be wearing? Hard hitting questions for sure. It was these sort of questions that were asked at the MSNBC-sponsored Democratic at Drexel University. The debate was a disaster for voters looking for answers to the important questions of how we can combat global warming, how viable is clean energy, and how can America become energy independent. The debate moderators were Tim Russert of ‘Meet the Press’ and Brain Williams of NBC News. They did not ask questions that would be of value to Americans who perceive these issues as important. Instead, the debate questions encouraged candidates to attack one another and asked irrelevant questions about UFOs and Halloween costumes.

In a recent Yale University/Gallup/Clear Vision Institute poll ‘62% of Americans now believe that global warming is an urgent threat requiring immediate and drastic action.’ Further, that poll also stated that ‘40% of all Americans said that a presidential candidate’s position on combating global warming would be extremely or very important in deciding which candidate they would choose.’

“This debate was extremely disappointing. Discussion of significant topics such as global warming, energy independence, and clean energy were virtually absent during this debate,” stated SmartPower President, Brian F. Keane. “The media in general, and MSNBC in this particular debate, have not been asking the tough questions about these important topics. We cannot continue to let personal attacks, ‘sound bites,’ and irrelevant questions dominate the debates.”

“Americans need to tell their political leaders that global warming is an important issue to them and that using clean energy is an important means of combating it. Clean energy is real, its here and its working for America,” Keane concluded.

So what do you think? Did you even watch the debates, do you know where your favorite candidate stands on environmental issues, do you have a favorite candidate, do the candidates know where you stand on these issues? These are all questions you should answer as primary season is just around the corner. The powers that be are counting on us the American people to stay apathetic and uninvolved. Lets show them all that they are dealing with citizens, not consumers!
