Power plants are the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. They account for 40 percent of the CO2 pumped into the atmosphere. Do you want to know exactly which of these power plants is producing the most carbon emissions? Well now you can find out. You can also find out the carbon emissions of over 50,000 power plants from around the world. The CARMA Web site (Carbon Monitoring for Action) allows you to quickly figure out the worst and best (it includes wind farms and solar parks) of the power producers around the world.
The site reveals that just 100 companies account for more than half of all the carbon dioxide emissions from all the power plants in the world. It also shows the likely impact of proposed coal-fired power plants. There are many bad eggs in the western world, but China is really catching up fast. Give this site a look and discover how the power plants in your neck of the woods stack up. If you find something you don’t like be sure to call up your congress person and let them know.
Hat tip Bill for this great tip.
I applaud the attempt to understand a part of the puzzle we have to resolve. Thanks!
The CARMA site is one of three that we’ve been working with to promote the Center for Global Development via search marketing and social media – thanks for helping to spread the word about a really great cause!
We blogged about our work with the Center here: Media Partners with Center for Global Development
