Al Gore gets a lot of credit for bringing global warming to the attention of the masses. But there have been other valiant and hard working warriors who have not gotten the credit they are due. On such person is Bill McKibben. We have covered his great works before (here and here). McKibben has been one of the driving forces behind the step it up movement. Producing the largest global demonstrations on climate change since the first earth day some 30 years ago. His new book Fight Global Warming Now, continues the fight.
Bill McKibben wrote some of the first books about the dangers of global warming, and has been instrumental in getting the science of the issue to the public. Fight Global Warming Now is not about the science of global warming. It is instead a manual for what you can do to stop it. The book is a field guide for how to organize your neighbors. Starting right off with practical and effective strategies for building a movement.
It will take a movement to change the world and this book gives you the tools. The book is organized into chapters, each an ingredient in the ultimate goal of solving global warming.
- Make it credible
- Make it snappy
- Make it collaborative
- Make it meaningful
- Make it creative (and fun!)
- Make it wired
- Make it seductive (to the media)
- Make it last
The book arms you with enough knowledge to convince and organize the people around you into a lean mean organization ready to make real change. I found this book very uplifting, it is suffused with a sense of purpose, and after reading only half the book I was ready to start my own campaign to start doing something about the problem. If you are sick of reading about the problem of global warming, and want to start doing something about it (right now), but maybe you are not sure how to go about it, well you need this book! Printed on recycled paper, and in a easy to pocket paperback size, this book will let you hit the ground running on your quest to build your campaign to stop global warming.
As a special bonus, the fist person to leave a comment with something they have done to fight global warming will get a free copy of this book sent by me. All you have to do is promise to read it and then use the knowledge inside.
Well, maybe it’s cheating, being a member of The Sietch and all that, but I can safely say that the work I am currently doing with our local infant’s school to cut electricity, gas and transport emissions, and more importantly, get the children involved in environmental issues, is something I am quite proud of.
Green Seniors and The Earth Blog – well, who knows what they have done, lots I hope, but I could certainly use a bit of practical advice in bringing down the consumer culture piece by piece.
K.
I’m just getting started in making changes to our lives – I’m part of that consumer culture that all of you are trying to reorganize and baptize into the new “green” way of thinking. Like I said, we are just starting… so this is what I have done:
1. Change all the light bulbs I can to the newer more efficient ones.
2. Started buying organic
3. Recycle all those nasty plastic bags.
4. Asked my hubby for a composter (the cool rotating kind) for Christmas
5. Teaching my 5 year old about conservation
6. Switched to all non toxic cleaners
7. Planning a garage sale (encourage others to reuse my old stuff!)
8. Helped get a local representative get elected who promised to get Recycling in our Parish (aka: County)
I know I need to do more – but for now, I can’t buy a Prius or any of those adorable small cars – I have 3 kids in car seats! Maybe I’ll write to the automobile industry and ask them to step it up a notch. I’m also researching solar power and how I can get my entire subdivision to buy in on it – maybe we can get a bulk discount!
Bill McKibben’s a fricken’ fraud. Dumb jerk.
