I have been living in Boston now for an entire month. So far I have been having a pretty good experience. I had a rough weekend, and a couple weeks ago someone threw a water balloon at me while I walking, but other than that things have been alright. I have my routine down well. Get up at 6am, eat breakfast, blog, get on my bike go to work, work, eat lunch, work, get on my bike come home, blog, eat dinner, make lunch for the next day, read, sleep at 11pm. The best part about living in such a dense city so far has been the fact that I can really ride my bike to anything. I am in easy bike distance of literally everything I need. I have three grocery stores, and a plethora of smaller food shops within 5 miles. Banking can be done online, or at two locations near where I work, there is a laundromat a mile away, even entertainment and clubs just 5 miles down the street. I even managed to get the City to drop off a blue recycling bin for me, so now I can recycle just about all of the waste I am producing, if only I had a compost pile I would produce almost no waste….hmm.
I have driven maybe 3 times this month. At my old house I filled up my gas tank every other week, here I am doing it about once every month and a half. I am going to have to change things up a bit if/when it snows. I can handle the cold but my bike is a road bike and its skinny little tires are not going to cut it on ice and snow. I am thinking about getting a hybrid, with knobbies for the winter and slicks for the rest of the year. If I spend 600 dollars on a new bike, it would pay for itself in less than 8 months (assuming 60 a month for the T, plus gas, plus oil changes, etc).
There are things I miss desperately. There is little green plant life in this city. Like most big cities it is mostly steal, concrete, and asphalt. If I had my way most of downtown would be converted into pedestrian only walkways with a lot of green and organic materials. The road plan of this city was never (I mean never) ready for cars. If you try and drive in the city on any normal day you have to be crazy. It is such a small town, and already has a large public transport system, that you can easily get most places faster by bus or train.
That contest I talked about last week was postponed till this week (the prizes have not come in the mail yet) but when they do, it is going to be sweet! Stay tuned.
I will leave you with some recent pic of my travels.
