Fifteen cities from around the world are participating in a $5 billion plan to reduce energy consumption by renovating existing buildings. The plan, which is spearheaded by the Clinton Foundation, enlists the services of five of the world’s largest banks and four of the world’s largest energy service companies.
Clinton says energy usage from major cities contributes to roughly 70 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in those areas. Of that 70% a full 50% is generated from buildings. Therefore, Clinton along with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and London Mayor Ken Livingstone have unveiled a new program designed to reduce energy use in buildings worldwide. Cities offering their municipal buildings in this retrofit program include Bangkok, Berlin, Chicago, Houston, Johannesburg, Karachi, London, Melbourne, Mexico City, New York, Rome Sao Paulo, Seoul, Tokyo and Toronto.
