Over the next couple of days I will be posting all the earth day adventures The Sietch was a part of this year. First up canal clean up.
Canal clean up is an annual event that teams up community volunteers, Sietch Members and AmeriCorps Cape Cod. Here is the day recreated with pictures.
More below the fold (warning lots of pictures could take a long time to load)
This little guy showed up early ready to pick up trash. The Cape Cod Canal is one of the most popular fishing spots on the cape, it is also home to a running/bike trail. Thousands of people use the area every week during the summer. It is also a major conduit for boats large and small. As such it gets pretty dirty.
Every year AmeriCorps Cape Cod has a big clean up event, for the last three years Sietch Members have been present. This year the boy-scouts showed up as well.
We were also lucky enough to have the red cross volunteers show up. They were there to give out food in order to get disaster practise in a controlled situation.
Everyone likes walking on a clean canal, but these guys like it best.
We had A LOT! of hard workers out picking up A LOT! of trash.
Before
After
We picked up over 7 POUNDS of fishing line. These are bags full of just fishing line.
In the end we picked up over 600 pounds of trash and had over 100 volunteers that showed up. A good time was had by all.
