Top Ten Must Read Environmental Blogs

green websites

With all the millions of websites on the net (and hundreds more being added every hour) it can be easy to miss the diamonds scattered among the vast ocean of rough. The good people at Lighter Foot Step, which itself is a shining example of one of these diamonds, has honored The Sietch by including it on it’s top ten list of “Up-and-comer” blogs. Thanks!

Here is the rest of the list.

Lighter Footstep is an excellent magazine style blog. They always have about 20 features stories on the front page. Each one well illustrated, and well written. They don’t pump out 30 posts a day, but rather focus on quality and it shows. I was so impressed with the really excellent way that LF explored the idea of the green blog community that I decided to steal the idea and do my own top ten list.

Opinions differ, and different people look for different things in a website. I decided that I would simply do a list of ten web resources that I feel everyone should be reading to stay up to date with whats going on in the green world. I am going to leave about the big players Treehugger, Lime, Autoblog Green, etc. These sites get a lot of attention, but so often it seems to me that smaller sites are getting to the news first, and in some cases reporting on it better.

The criteria for selection was pretty simple. Is the site good? So here is the list (in no particular order).

1. AfriGadget
afrigadget

They say necessity is the mother of invention. There are few places on earth that face the same level of need as Africa. The strong and creative people of that continent have had a lot of hard shakes to deal with, and yet they push on. AfriGadget chronicles the ingenuity of people who have very little. You will be uplifted reading stories of people making some of the most amazing things out of almost nothing.

2. After Gutenberg
after Gutenberg

I am consistently impressed with the detailed nature of the articles on After Gutenberg. They are always illustrated with great images and diagrams. I find this site very useful for a detailed look at the progress being made in sustainable and green transportation, as well as other interesting topics.

3. Appropriate Infrastructure Development Blog (AIDG Blog)
aidg blog

AIDG is the blog voice of a wonderful group that seeks to help developing countries create environmentally friendly technologies that will allow the people of thous countries to improve their lives in a sustainable way. But that’s not all, AIDG regularly features environmental news, technological innovation and tales of taking hard lives and making them better. You can tell from reading the blog that they really enjoy what they are doing, and have a good time helping the world.

4. Clean Break
clean break

Want to know whats shaking in the clean tech world up north? Look no further. Tyler Hamilton (who also writes for The Star) always seems to have the best and most in depth knowledge of what is going on in the green movement when it comes to Canada. I especially like his in depth coverage of Canadian politics.

5. Biopact
biopact

While I must admit I have not made up my mind about biofuels, if there is one place that is doing it’s best to convince me of the merits of biofuel, it would be Biopact. Billing itself as the biofuel connection between Africa and Europe they are the place to go when it comes to all things biofuels. They are a wonderful source for the latest and greatest in biofuel technology, biofuel sourcing, and biofuel political news.

6. Worldchanging
worldchanging

I know some would consider Worldchanging as one of the “big players” in the green blogosphere, but I want to include it anyway. Worldchanging is the thinking person’s Treehugger. They produce thoughtful, uplifting articles about the positive things going on to make the world better. Sometimes you need to be reminded that the world is still trying to save itself after a long time slogging through the gloom and doom. I also think it points out that you can be a popular website without plastering every square inch of your web space with blinking flash ads. (*cough* Treehugger *cough*)

7.Green Wombat
green wombat

I like green wombat for a couple of reasons. First the name is great. As a guy who runs a strangely named website, its good to know that there are others that share my sensibilities for nomenclature. Secondly Todd Woody writes in depth informative articles that educate you about issues while exposing you to an informed opinion. As a bonus the pictures are always really nice.

8.Celsias
celsias

A Blog from the New Zealand. The Celsias blog covers a variety of eco-issues. From air cars, to wind turbines you will always find an interesting point of view. Celsias is also not afraid to take on some “sacred cow” issues in the eco-community. Going so far as to present both sides *gasp* of some issues like wind farms, and biofuels.

9.The Earth Blog
the earth blog

Another Great “over the pond” blog from an Internet friend of mine (and Sietch member) Keith. He doesn’t write a lot, but when he does its always very good and very well thought out. I enjoy that he tends to spend his time really thinking through an issue and then posting a well thought out, well researched, comprehensive article that you can read (as opposed to the browsing and link madness that seems to dominate most blogs these days). He doesn’t get wrapped up in the “daily grind” of blogging. Instead of pumping out twenty blurbs a day he examines a few issues with great skill.

10. ecogeek
ecogeek

I only recently discovered ecogeek. Being a person who is assuredly a geek, and someone who has a great ecological interest it seemed to be just my sort of thing. They offer a overview of many different aspects of the renewable energy world. I will continue to keep an eye on them to see how the develop, you can help by checking them out.

So now we come to the part where you tell me what sites I missed. Don’t be shy, I know there must be some really excellent green sites out there that I must have missed. Make sure to drop me a comment and let me know.
