Monday Confessional

Its sodbustin day! Today I spent my morning and afternoon sifting rocks and clay out of the front yard. Why? Because its some of the poorest soil I have ever encountered, even by Cape Cod standards. We are using a technique called double digging by which you can revitalize soil. You dig out a bed to a depth of 9-12 inches (we had to use a pick ax, no joke). Then you lay down three inches of loam, put the dirt back in (we had to sift it through a couple milk crates to get the MANY rocks out of it) then you lay another couple inches of loam on top. Till the whole things up real good and you have just created a nice bed of top soil.

We are replanting the front yard with native plants. To show that you can have a nice yard, and have native plants at the same time. There is no need to import the next invasive whatever from Asia. There are plenty of very nice grasses and bushes that are drought tolerant, native, and very pleasing to the eye.

Earth Celebration was this weekend. It rained, the turnout was lousy, we still had a good time. Earth Celebration is our annual event where we highlight our educational events. Recycling, tides moon and dunes, geological cycles, invasive species ID, that sort of thing.
