Company Spotlight: WaterFurnace International

From time to time, I like to highlight companies that are doing something good for the world. With that in mind I recently had some nice emails with WaterFurnace International makers of some really interesting geothermal heating and cooling equipment.

I was in contact with John Preston WaterFurnace International’s Eastern United States Region Manager.

John told me a bit about himself and the company.

”I have been in the industry for nearly 15 years; 10 years as a contractor and the past 5 years with WaterFurnace International. I have been involved in all aspects of the HVAC market and have seen WaterFurnace geothermal system sales grow by leaps and bounds. I find it exciting and very rewarding when homeowners approach me at tradeshows, and call me to share how much money they saved by going “green” and installing a WaterFurnace geothermal system. As a contractor I saw people sink so much money into their new homes that they couldn’t even afford to live there when the normal expenditures such as heating & cooling bills arrived. As a result, my goal as a WaterFurnace representative is to educate homeowners on why a WaterFurnace geothermal system is the smartest investment they can make when building a new home or upgrading their current heating and cooling system.”

WaterFurnace has an interesting history that John shared with me, again in his words.

WaterFurnace International is a modern-day “Horatio Alger success story”. The company was started in Fort Wayne, IN in 1980 with three employees working out of a garage. The goal of these pioneers was to use the free, renewable energy of the earth to heat and cool homes. Today, WaterFurnace systems are used throughout North America and all over the world, including installations at Buckingham Palace in London and at 2008 Olympic venues in Beijing, China. In fact, WaterFurnace International is recognized today as the leading manufacturer and distributor of geothermal heating and air conditioning equipment for the residential single-family home market.

I was pretty interested in how the systems worked so he explained it to me.

WaterFurnace geothermal heating and cooling systems tap into the constant, moderate temperatures found a few feet below the surface of the earth, to offer the finest in home comfort conditioning. “Geothermal” pertains to the heat of the earth, and it’s literally right there in your own backyard. In fact you’ll find 10 times the amount of heat required over an entire heating season below the earth’s surface, therefore, WaterFurnace geothermal systems can heat and cool your home at a fraction of the cost of conventional heating and cooling systems. Plus, WaterFurnace systems are great for the environment. No fossil fuels are needed and only environmentally friendly refrigerant and water is used for heat transfer.

When I asked him what made WaterFurnace products better than others he explained.

The WaterFurnace Envision Series offers industry-leading efficiencies, exceptional comfort, whisper quite operation, increased longevity, and improved serviceability.
With 5 COP and 30 EER efficiency ratings, the Envision Series offers homeowners the most efficient heating, cooling, and hot water generation system ever rated by the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) 13256-1 (GLHP).

I was pretty impressed with their systems when I stopped by their booth at a recent trade show. If you are interested in learning more about the systems check out their website www.waterfurnace.com.

  1. Yes I agree that this piece of equipment appears to be tops in the industry! But it is truly upsetting that they will not sell to me an independent contractor in Ct. so that I can install it in my home. I was intead refered to another contractor for which I really would prefer not to do. The facts are that i have been in the buisnees for many many years and I just want a quility piece of hvac equipment to help me to free our dependance on oil.

  2. Two points we all need to understand: PARTS and SERVICE.

My 3 yo WF unit (SN WE2265) has had 3 failures in 3 years. 10 days without heat in January; in February, 14 days with no hot water! Nothing have been covered by the “10 year warantee”. And the installer has left the country.

Part number 33P526-04 has failed TWICE in two years.

I would interested in an email from WF customer service.

  3. I just shared my story on the WF website, as well as, read other folks comments and many of them shared how quite their unit is. Ours is anything but quite, it can be heard in nearly every room of the house when it comes on. The unit is located in our attached garage. Is this unit truly supposed to be quite or are these folks talking about a different unit than ours? The installers have added a “blanket” around the compressor to lessen the noise. They claim that is the best they can do.

Last night we noticed that the compressor would cycle on for what seemed like about 30 seconds or less and then off, would stay off for a few minutes and then repeat the cycle. Is this normal?

Since the beginning of this heating season we have had the heating installers/service folks at the house on average of every two weeks for one heating issue or another.

Can you refer me to an “expert” that could trouble shoot this heating system and maybe solve our issues?

By the way we do not feel as though we are experiencing any sort of energy savings with this system. This is a “Green Built” house that received an Energy Star rating of 5+. In January 2010 our kwh usage was 1,815. We have a gas clothes dryer, gas range, and gas water heater. We keep the thermostats set at 67-68 degrees.

  4. my WF is only 5yrs + 4mths old and a compressor failure combined with a control board costing $xxxx.xx. neither covered by the warrenty. I personally know homeowners that have coal or oil burners that have not needed repairs for 25yrs+ SHOW ME THE SAVINGS !!!!

  5. Mr. Markovich,

Our product development team is working with Mr. Ryan to resolve the issues he has experienced. We have also been in contact with Mr. Harris, and our senior field representative will be visiting his home later this month. If you will provide your model and serial numbers, we would be more than happy to look into your concerns.

They will try to apply for the largest amount possible, but actually,
this kind of decision can only result to headaches, more expenses and possible foreclosure.

One benefit of home ownership that you can make
a potential first time home buyer aware of is the financial advantage of owning a home versus renting.

Regardless, the eligibility is basically as stated above, and entitles you to save
$750 on your taxes. This welcome news since published reports this week reveal
that California leads the country in a tide of new foreclosures in August.
Take advantage of this important tool before looking for a home.

  7. I am actually inspired with your writing talent.
Anyway keep up the excellent high quality writing, it’s rare to see a fantastic blog such as this nowadays.
