The New Alcoholism

blue cloud bottle

As the message of climate change becomes clearer and more immediate, as the call to act now becomes so much more plaintive, and the severity of the situation outweighs any reasonable argument…we opt out.

We are all paying lip service to the climate change truth. We all feel that we should drive less, fly less, use less electricity, buy less things; but how long will it take before we get round to it? As a society we wallow comfortably and numbly in the thought that just one more flight will do no harm. The earth can handle those extra miles per gallon, or that air conditioning unit left on all day. It will be ok.

Climate change apathy has become The New Alcoholism.

And how true this is. Fill in the questionnaire below, and see if you are a Climate Change Apatholic:

1 – Have you ever decided to stop emitting greenhouse gases for a week or so, but only lasted for a couple of days?

Yes No

2 – Do you wish people would mind their own business about your emissions — stop telling you what to do?

Yes No

3 – Have you ever switched from one kind of pollution to another in the hope that this would keep you from feeling guilty?

Yes No

4 – Have you had to go for a drive upon awakening during the past year?

Yes No

5 – Do you envy people who can live their lives without emitting many greenhouse gases?

Yes No

6 – Have you had problems connected with your polluting behavior during the past year?

Yes No

7 – Has your polluting behavior caused trouble at home?

Yes No

8 – Do you ever try to switch on “extra” appliances because you do not get enough?

Yes No

9 – Do you tell yourself you can stop polluting any time you want to, even though you keep polluting when you don’t mean to?

Yes No

10 – Have you missed days of work or school because you couldn’t stop using your home entertainment systems or PC?

Yes No

11 – Do you have “denials”?

Yes No

12 – Have you ever felt that your life would be better if you did not pollute?

Yes No

I wonder if anyone recognises these questions.

Maybe it would help by looking here.
