First Large Scale Wave Power Project In UK Gets Feet Wet

Last week a new wave “hub” was launched off the coast of the UK. It will be monitored closely by UK officials and scientists around the world. The hub will monitor wave energy and the data gained will allow for the testing of different kinds of waver energy devices.

This would act as an offshore electrical “socket” connected to the national grid by an underwater cable.

The government wants the UK to be producing 10% of its energy needs from renewable resources by 2010, and the region has been told it must find room for 280 wind turbines to meet energy targets.

Energy Minister Mike O’Brien says the Juice fund award is a welcome boost for the marine renewables industry.

“With our engineering skills and experience we have the potential to be a world leader in this field and capitalise on new industry and jobs,” he said.

The Wave Hub would be the UK’s first large-scale wave energy project, allowing manufacturers to carry out tests before going ahead with the development of commercial projects. BBC

The British government is helping to meet its renewable energy goals by investing in research infrastructure. This will allow private industry to move quickly towards developing technologies that will provide new energy and new jobs.

  2. Hi my name is Karina and I’m a student at a magnet school in Austin. In My journalism class we are making a website called the daily wave and I needed a picture of a wave for my news story . So I was wondering if I could use this picture as one of my backgrounds. Please let me know ASAP. Thank you.

  3. Did you know that Romania has a technical solution with the highest efficiency to capture wave power?. Patent 108893 entitled Dynamic Engine for Sea Wave Energy Catching. A pioneering invention. It is estimated that “dynamic engine” has the ability to catching wave energy at a rate of over 80% while the other technical solutions known worldwide, are not able to capture wave energy with a higher percentage of about 10-15%.
