Cape Cod Climate Change Panel- Rob O’Leary And Cape Wind

cape cod climate change panel

I have talked before about Keith Bergman and his continuation of Al Gores mission to alert and inform the world about global warming. I was at Keith’s first such presentation several months ago. This was Mr. Bergman’s 6th presentation, and this time it was followed by a panel discussion.

He had added a couple of very interesting slides, showing among other things what a 20 foot rise in sea level would do to Cape Cod. The presentation had been slimmed down to a much more lean and mean show aimed at the local audience. Overall it had improved significantly. While the slide show was interesting, the highlight of the evening was the panel discussion.

Moderated by none other than Cape Wind opponent Rob O’Leary, the panel discussion quickly moved to why State Senator O’Leary supported renewable energy, but not the Cape Wind project. Mr O’Leary quickly changed the subject. The entire panel discussion segment of the night was one political maneuver after another, with some of the slickest political double speak I have seen in a while (not since Bob Barr was on an ACLU panel)

For those of you not “in the know” about the big ruckus over the Cape Wind project let me try and sum it up for you. There are some who think that creating a wind farm that will create more than 75% of all of Cape Cod’s electrical needs is a pretty good idea (including but not limited to The army corps of engineers, a majority of Mass. residents, The Mass. Audubon, Greenpeace, and myself), and there are others who don’t want their view spoiled. Guess who writes the checks out to Senator O’Learys reelection campaign.

I am, of course, being cynical. For good reason, Rob O’Leary, and several other big name liberal Democrats talk a good talk about supporting renewable energy, but seem to have a real hard time erecting them in their own backyards. That is why it has been YEARS and still there has been no action on moving the Cape Wind project to completion.

If Mr. O’Leary has a good reason for not supporting Cape Wind he didn’t say so last night. I would love to sit down with him and allow him to explain to me exactly why he is so FOR renewable energy, and so AGAINST a wind farm that has passed muster with major environmental groups. Cape Wind could be the first offshore wind farm in America, It could be a model for the rapid change that needs to be done to solve the problems of man made global warming, it could be done by now. But its not, and poor political leadership is the number one cause.
